On March 29, 1995, the Smiths Falls Lions Club celebrated its 55th Charter Anniversary. The Club has a proud history. It was sponsored by the Lions Club of Gananoque and received its Charter on March 29, 1940 from District A-4 Governor, Cliff Cotter. There were 35 members listed on the original roster including Lion Jim McCue, who is still a member. The late Archie S. Paul was the Charter President. The Smiths Falls Lions Club, which was organized during World War II, initially had difficulties when many of its members volunteered for the Armed Forces. However, the loyalty and enthusiasm of the remaining members enabled the Club to survive, prosper and complete many worthwhile projects.
The Smiths Falls Lions Club is also proud of the fact that in its years of service, it has sponsored the following Clubs into Lionism; Perth (1953), Merrickville (1954) and Carleton Place (1964). All of these Lions Clubs are currently thriving and serving their communities. The history and accomplishments of the Club have been considered as follows:

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • sponsored the Blood Donor Clinic during the war years and supported the British Child War Victims Fund
  • erected cabins at the Grippen Lake boys Camp (with the Brockville and Gananoque Lions)
  • supported humanitarian efforts during the faamine in Ethiopia
  • provided funds to the OPP for Drinking and Driving seminars
  • supported the St. Joseph Camp for the blind and the Blind Anglers (BAIT) Program

CONTRIBUTED TO THE FOLLOWING ORGANIZATIONS

  • the Red Cross and the Victorian Order of Nurses
  • the Cancer Society and the Canadian national Institute for the Blind
  • Juvenile Diabetes and Diabetes Awareness and the Civic Hospital
  • the Salvation Army and the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario
  • the Heart and Stroke Fund and the Canadian Liver Foundation
  • Big Brothers and Sisters, Cancer Society and the March of Dimes
  • Alzheimer Association, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides
