It is always a good sign for us when we worship God using materials that truly give honour and glory to him. We set these things apart so that in a symbolic way they reflect our self-giving to the mission that has been entrusted to us. Brothers, we are now coming to a part of the year where we as Catholics take time to reflect upon who we are as a people of God. Lent begins this year on Wednesday, March 1st with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. Every year we hear the same Gospel proclaimed from Mark 2:18-22. In this passage Jesus tells us about being genuine in our faith. He tells us to avoid the pitfalls of showing people that we are good Christians by the way we demonstrate our pious practices. Note, that his instruction of giving to the poor, of fasting and prayers are to be done in secret. That is, by being between me and God. In a deeper way, we are not to look to be rewarded by our fellow human beings, Instead, we are looking to God to give us the grace to be his instruments in this world of ours. Doing God s work is not to draw attention to ourselves but to bring people to God. Obviously, there are times when we demonstrate our union with one another by worshipping together and participating in public prayer. This is also an essential part of Lent. By making the effort to participate in these activities we witness to the other aspect of our faith which is communal. When we come together we are one body, one body in Christ. As such we give God praise and glory with the parishioners that we share our faith with. This year let our resolve be to participate in daily Mass and prayer as we ready ourselves for the great feast of Easter. The following are a few activities and dates to remember during Lent: Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 1:30pm in the Church. Students from St. Francis de Sales and St. Luke Catholic High School will be present; 1:30pm at St. James School and at 7:30pm in the Church. Every Monday during Lent, we will have the Stations of the Cross devotion in the Church at 4:30pm. It will be followed by Mass at 5:00pm Tuesday, March 7th we will have a Memorial Mass at 7pm. This will be in memory of parishioners who have died since last year s Memorial Mass. Tuesday, April 4th at 7:00pm Parish Penance Celebration in preparation for Easter. Passion (Palm) Sunday, Weekend of April 9/10. This is the start of Holy Week Holy Tuesday, April 11th there will be a bus leaving St. Francis at 5:20pm for the Cathedral in Kingston. We celebrate the Chrism Mass. At this Mass the oils used in the sacraments are blessed. Holy Thursday, April 13. The celebration of the Lord s Supper followed by an opportunity for adoration until 11pm. Good Friday, April 14th. The ecumenical walk through the town with the Cross at 12 noon. Good Friday, April 14. The Celebration of the Lord s Passion at 3pm Holy Saturday, April 15. The Easter Vigil beginning after Sundown at 8:00pm Easter Sunday, April 16. Regular Sunday Mass Times May your Lent be one of growth and holiness. Vivat Jesus Fr. God bless, ADVANCE \u 12Brother Jack G/K SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT District Deputy's Report Parish Priest A Review Your December issue of Columbia contained an excerpt from the new biography, Parish Priest, Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism. That excerpt was actually the entire first chapter of the book. That first chapter is mainly about two generations of the Downes family. As a youth Father Mcgivney came to know the Downes family and his intercession to save them from being broken up when he was a curate at St. Mary s Church gave an early indication of his concerns for the poor among the parish. When he was twelve, Michael McGivney told his father that he intended to become a priest. His father answered with a stern No! The twelve year old s resolve only strengthened and after graduating from high school at age thirteen, he kept that goal in sight. Michael grew up immersed in the parish and saw the priest as a tower of strength. He was certain that he had the qualities to become a good priest. He looked forward to becoming an integral part of the Family of God and by living as Christ s brother he knew that he could become that tower of strength for the large and varied family that made up a parish. Michael s father finally gave in to the inevitable and young Michael headed north to St. Hyacinthe, Quebec where he studied for two years. He later studied one year under the Jesuits in Montreal before enrolling in the college that became Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York. After those preparatory years he completed his studies in a Seminary in Baltimore. After becoming a priest returned to Connecticut where he grew up. His first assignment was as curate in St. Mary s Church in New Haven. His pastor fell gravely ill and Father McGivney was thrust into the position of being virtually in charge of the parish before he had even one year of experience. His charm, warmth, empathy, and boundless energy soon saw him noticed throughout the city. His homilies were spoken softly and slowly and drew many into his church. Almost all the Catholics at the time were first and second generation Irish refugees from the famines that continually devastated that poor country. Another element was the French-Canadians who flocked to the factories in New England to find steady work. In both cases, poverty hung over their heads like a cloud and even when a family prospered, it only took an accident or and early death of the father to render a family penniless and cut off from any hope. As Father McGivney looked out at his parishioners, his heart broke for them, knowing the dire fates that many of them would face. In his resolve to help those who he loved and served, the germ of an idea that would eventually become the Knight of Columbus was born. It was not to be an easy birth and after many false starts he finally organized a group of men who laid out the framework and the future of our Order. Even after it was formed, received a charter, and held regular meetings, Council # 1 languished for over a year before any more men joined it. The impetus for growth finally came from a neighbouring community where some men saw the potential of the organization that Father McGivney conceived. Even then, resistance from other priests and bishops almost killed the movement before it was well started. When growth occurred throughout Connecticut, Father McGivney learned that starting the order, as difficult as that was, keeping it focused demanded much of his time as years went on. Father McGivney, like so many priests of that era, succumbed to countless exposures to diseases when he visited the sick. He died within a week of turning thirty-eight. He died mainly of exhaustion. He gave so much of himself that he had no reserves to fight influenza and pneumonia. He did live long enough to see his order reach six thousand members and begin its expansion out of its home state. His funeral procession through New Haven included hundreds of Knights in full regalia. He could not have had any idea that his order that was so stubbornly slow in its birth would reach the magnitude that it has. His original purpose of providing a few dollars a week so that a widow could hold her family together dims in comparison with the hundreds of millions that we generate for charity today. Parish Priest is a modest book of just over two hundred very readable pages. Would I like to see every Knight read it? Yes. Every Knight s wife? Yes. Every catholic, young and old? Yes! There could be no more exemplary example of what being a Catholic truly means than one finds considering the life of our founder. He is well on his way toward becoming a saint and he richly deserves our support. Parish Priest: Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism by Douglas Brinkley and Julie M. Fenster is published by Harper Collins and is available in most bookstores. The Word: in Perth will carry it. It can be ordered at a good discount through Supreme Office www.kofc.org, although it took more than four weeks to receive a copy that way. Denis Richardson An Excerpt from Parish Priest Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism As one reads the new biography of Father McGivney, it is impossible to underestimate the power of his faith. From the sureness at age twelve that he would become a priest, young Michael became completely absorbed in his parish and in his faith. Like the young Christ teaching in the synagogue, one hesitates to call what they shared so much a faith but rather a certainty. The following is a short segment with a parable that mirrors Father McGivney s faith. Old Wolf, a Cheyenne chief from Montana, told this story: In the land of the Cheyennes, there is a mountain higher than all the mountains around him. All the Cheyennes know that mountain; even our forefathers knew him. When children we ran around wheresoever we wanted. We were never afraid to lose our way as long as we could see that mountain, which would show us home again. When grown up we followed the buffalo and the elk; we cared not where we pursued the running deer, so long as the mountain was in sight; for we knew he was ever a safe guide, and never failed in his duty. When men, we fought the Sioux, the Crows, and the white men. We went after our enemy though the way ran high up, and low down. Our hearts trembled not on account of the road; for as long as we could see the mountain, we felt sure of finding our way home again. When far away, our hearts leaped for joy on seeing him, for he told us that our home came nearer. During the winter, the snow covered all the earth with a mantle of white; we could no longer distinguish him from other mountains except by his height, which told us he was the mountain. Sometimes dark clouds gathered above. They hid his head from our view, and out of them flew fiery darts, boring holes into his side. Then thunder shook him head to foot; but the storm passed away and the mountain stood forever. This mountain is the Black-robe.* His heart is firm as a rock. He changes not. He speaks to us the words of truth. We are always sure of our path, when we look to him for guidance. He is the mountain that leads up to God. It was in order to stand as firm as Old Wolf s mountain that the parish priest made his vows and sacrifices. Without any turbulence in his heart, he might just be as dependable and strong. That Father McGivney sought to become that mountain is proven in everything that he did. * A native American expression for a Roman Catholic priest. ADVANCE \u 12Canadian Olympic Gold Medallist: Earthly Gold Nothing to Heavenly Crown TC \l4 " www.lifesite.net February 23, 2006 By Hilary White TURIN, February 23, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - After winning gold and silver medals at the Turin Olympics, Canadian long-track speed skater, Cindy Klassen says she owes everything to God. "I've won a medal," she told reporters, "but that's nothing compared to the crown I'll get in Heaven. I see a lot of people in sports who think when they reach a certain level they've got it made, but really, you can only find happiness in the Lord." Cindy Klassen, a Winnipeg native and devout Mennonite, has won more medals at these Olympics than any Canadian woman at any single Olympic games. Klassen says, "I want to use the publicity I've gotten through my success for His glory. I go back to my old high school and talk to the students. I . . . let people know I'm a Christian." An all-round sportswoman, Cindy has been playing Canada's most popular sport since she was old enough to hold a hockey stick. She began speed skating at 18, was a member of the National Women's Lacrosse Team at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and a member of the Women's National Junior Hockey Team. Her first Olympic medals were two bronze wins at the 2002 winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. Her connection to the Christian community is strong and has helped her in her sporting efforts. At Salt Lake City, she says she was nearly overcome with nervousness, when she received an email from students at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute from which she graduated in 1997, "packed with notes of encouragement, telling me they were cheering (and) praying for me." "And that's when it hit me," Cindy said. "This is just another race. [God] knows the outcome. All I can do is use what He's given me. All I can do is do the best I can. So, that's what I did." Her parents encouraged her to start speed skating, Cindy's only objection to which were the "skin-tight" spandex outfits designed to minimize wind drag. For the better part of my first year in speed skating, I went against the grain, and wore very baggy clothes," Klassen laughs. Outside her sporting endeavours, Cindy loves classic literature, good music, great art, and travel, but they all take a back seat to her faith in Christ. When she failed to make the Canadian Olympic team on her first try in 1998, she left her future in the hands of God. "This was his plan all along. I learned by getting cut." As a believer in Jesus Christ, she adds, "even when you want things . . . if it's not in God's will, it's not going to happen. I've learned to go along with that. "Right now in speed skating I'm having the time of my life, but I have to be ready to move on if He wants me to do something else."
